about

Staiths(aka "the drops") were raised pier-like structures built level with the banks above the River Wear, from which coal was dropped down chutes to the waterside (and later, directly into the hulls of colliers). At the tops of the staithes were tangles of railway lines from various collieries in the Durham coalfield. Originally, coal was brought along them by horse-drawn wagons - and obviously that was the angle I was going for with this track.
