When I was small garden fences were only three feet high
A wooden frame with plastic wire for little feet to climb
Into the neighbours' garden, not worried about the dogs
Knock on for Rob or help myself to Mr Corners' pea pods

When I got a little bit taller, so did the fences too
Wooden stakes with no footholds, topped with spikes so cruel
Many a time, skipping over the fence, you'd catch your foot and fall
Or even worse, your foot would slip and you'd be skewered in the balls

When I grew up the garden fences were all six feet high
Solid panels with no grips or gaps for little kids to climb
Every garden is a closed-off world, safe from prying eyes
And my Mam has to stand on a bucket to chat and socialise
